Cartrography has a long and impressive history in China and the paper begins by setting the context for a consideration of recent developments by referring briefly to some of the landmarks in the developments of cartography since earliest times. This is followed by a description of the cartographic agencies and organizations nationwide. An assessment of recent achievements and the major challenges facing cartography in China is then made. China is one of the most active countries in the development of cartography especially as it applies to the challenge of socio-economic progress. -Author
