Compact waveguides based on electromagnetic-bandgap (EBG) technology using layered arrays of periodic metallic rings on a substrate have been developed. Structures have been designed and built that operate in the X-band. The measured insertion losses are about 2.8 dB in the overall operating bandwidth.
