I hypothesize that, like innovation, imitation is a major R&D activity. Upon validation, I test two hypotheses to explain the substitutability and complementarity dynamics between imitation and innovation within the firm. I find nuanced empirical support in a sample of 227 public firms from three R&D-intensive U.S. industries during 1991-2010.
