In this study, we examine retail depositors' knowledge of foreign ownership in the New Zealand banking market, and their attitudes towards the risks of foreign-owned banks. We find that respondents do not perceive foreign banks to be a great deal more risky, although it is not clear that respondents identify the long established, incumbent banks as being foreign-owned.
