Over the last few centuries, languages in every part of the world have undergone dramatic changes in the ways they are transmitted from one generation of speakers to the next. Changes in language transmission reflect cultural shifts and, in the case of Indigenous languages, there have been major, overwhelmingly negative, disruptions as colonial languages and technologies come into contact with Indigenous societies. In this article, we reflect on the community-based language transmission that has characterized Indigenous cultures, introduce the collaborative mapping process Cybercartography, and discuss ways in which the holistic nature of Indigenous Language Education can be strengthened in contemporary communities.
