Established contract research firms are looking for better scientific ground as they are facing low-cost competition from Indian and Chinese newcomers. Several contractors based in Europe and North America are growing, whereas others based in China and India have had to upgrade services to meet customer needs. Cell Genesys is a San Francisco based biotech firm, which conducts research programs with contractors based in Europe, started working with a research partner in China for the reason of particular technological capabilities of the service provider. Contract research organizations (CRO) based in China and India are prospering, while many in Europe or the US are unable to compete with lower costs in Asia. Chinese and Indian CROs expand their labor force and range of capabilities, while the western ones were contending with payroll reductions. The globalization of the contract research market also is working to support the global operations of the research industries.
