“Nihon eno okurimono (A gift to Japan) – Promoting critical thinking” examines various aspects of the Canadian education system such as French immersion and gifted programs in public schools. It concludes that Canada has been far more successful than Japan in fostering creativity in children and children’s ability to readily express their own ideas. The author advocates that children should be educated to develop their critical minds rather than just to be obedient. In order to become creative participants in global society, it is crucial that children in Japan can think critically and deliver tehir own opinions with confidence.
