Effective career development practices can contribute to employee recruitment, retention and productivity. Using data from interviews with 110 key personnel and surveys completed by 1509 knowledge workers in Silicon Valley North, this chapter explores the need for employee development, what employees want from their careers, key employee development strategies, tailoring the development approach and developing managers who develop people. A variety of initiatives are recommended which go beyond simply providing training. Key strategies include fostering a sense of accomplishment, providing stimulating work, developing breadth and supporting learning. The specific development needs of employees with different career orientations are also explored.
